Born in Malleswaram, Usha Sunderraj began playing table tennis at the age of seven. She studied at the Malleswaram Ladies Association School, Government Girls' High School and later at Mount Carmel College, before completing a Master's degree in English Literature from Central College.

Usha won five National Women's Singles titles during the 1960s, becoming one of the most successful table tennis players of her era. She was also a seven-time national runner-up and represented India at the World, Asian and Commonwealth Championships. At the state level, she remained Karnataka champion for 21 consecutive years, an extraordinary record that stood as a testament to her consistency and excellence.

A Life Dedicated to the Sport

After retiring from competitive table tennis, Usha continued to contribute to the game by serving on selection committees for the Table Tennis Federation of India, the Sports Authority of India, and the Karnataka Table Tennis Association. In 1966, Usha Sunderraj was honoured with the Arjuna Award, becoming one of the earliest table tennis players in India to receive the prestigious national sporting honour. She remained the only woman from Karnataka to win the National Women's Singles title until Archana Kamath achieved the feat in 2019.
