From Laggere to Everywhere
My name is Suresh, and I have been driving an auto-rickshaw for 20 years. I live in Laggere, which is about 8 kilometers from Malleshwaram. I take passengers anywhere they need to go, using apps like Ola and Uber to find customers and get fair rates for my rides.
Meter First, Apps Later
I start my day operating by meter, then switch to the apps later. While I prefer being a "local" auto driver over using the apps, the business through apps is better, especially because the prices are fixed and cannot be negotiated. However, the apps do take a commission from us. I begin work at 9 AM every morning and finish around 9 PM, spending 12 hours on the road each day.
A Positive Journey
Overall, I've had a positive experience as an auto driver and haven't encountered any major troubles. The people are generally very nice as well. When it comes to respect, that's often out of our hands. All we can do is adjust and move forward; the important thing is doing the job well. I respect everyone, but I don't always receive the same treatment in return. Still, my life is good, and the work is satisfying. I'm earning enough to support my family, and that's what matters most.
Changes We Cannot Control
Traffic and increasing crowds are changes happening all around Bangalore, not just in Malleshwaram. It cannot be stopped. When more people move into an area, traffic will naturally increase. This is all part of development—something we cannot control.
