A Vision of Holistic Care
Seva Sadan, established in 1936, is a charitable institution founded by Smt. S. Rajeevibai and Sri. Shiva Rao. The organization was created with the primary objective of providing care and protection for children in need and women in distress. The institution began as an initiative aimed at offering not only basic shelter and sustenance but also education and empowerment opportunities to its beneficiaries.
The association's early years were marked by its commitment to providing support, including shelter, food, clothing, and medical care, while also focusing on education and specialized vocational training. This holistic approach reflected a vision of creating an institution that would address both immediate needs and long-term development of those under its care.
Finding a Permanent Home
In 1941, Seva Sadan established its permanent location in the heart of Malleswaram, situated on 14th Cross, West Park Road. This development was made possible through the patronage of Lady Lokasundari Raman, the wife of renowned scientist Sir C V Raman, who became the institution's president. The move to permanent premises was further supported by the then City Municipality of Bangalore, now known as Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike, which provided crucial assistance for the organization's growth and development.
A Cultural Venue for the Community
Over the decades, Seva Sadan has expanded its infrastructure to accommodate diverse needs and functions. The facility encompasses an auditorium which has become a notable cultural venue in the area, offering an affordable space that regularly hosts classical dance performances, theater productions, and musical concerts, thereby contributing to the local cultural landscape.
Modern Programs for Today's Needs
In recent years, Seva Sadan has diversified its services through several specialized outreach programs. SANMATHI, the Family Counselling Centre operational since 2019, provides counselling services for women in distress and conducts self-empowerment courses for government college students. The organisation's industrial unit has evolved into SAMRUDDHI, a Tailoring and Craft Centre that offers vocational training to economically disadvantaged women in skills such as tailoring, sewing, and craft-making, enabling them to generate income and achieve economic independence. Additionally, SUVIDYA, an educational scholarship program, supports SevaSadan alumni and underprivileged girls pursuing higher education, currently assisting 21 students across various educational levels including PUC, degree programs, and professional courses.
Keeping Traditions Alive
Throughout the year, Seva Sadan maintains its cultural traditions by organizing various festival celebrations, including Gowri-Ganesha, Dusshera, Janamashtami, and Diwali. These events feature creative activities and special meals, providing residents and participants with opportunities for cultural engagement and community building.
The institution continues to serve as both a residential facility for those in need and a cultural hub that contributes to the broader community through its various programs and venue offerings.
