Sanitation Worker, 8th Main Road, Malleswaram

A Decade of Service

My name is Kiliyamma. I have been working as a sanitation worker for 10 years on the main road. I have three children—one son and two daughters. One daughter is married, and the other two stay with me.

Why I Stay

I like the work, so I will continue doing it. I haven't gone to any other place, and I'm not familiar with other areas since I live in Yeshwantpur and can walk here. I like living in Yeshwantpur because I get everything there.

Equal Treatment, Better Conditions

There is no difference between women and men working this job—all are treated the same. Compared to earlier times, it is better now. There are more vehicles to collect garbage, which makes the work easier for us.

The Challenge of Littering

The problem is that those who travel by car throw garbage bags on the road. Sometimes the bags are opened, and rubbish gets scattered all around, which becomes difficult to collect. That is one issue we face.

Simple Satisfaction

As for people, they are quite good, though I don't get to interact with them much since I work only on the main road. I don't have any problems, everything is going okay.
