Sanitation Worker, 8th Main Road, Malleswaram

Ten Years Keeping This Road Clean

I come from nearby, Yashwantpur—all of us stay close by. I have been working here for 10 years now—I asked for work and I was offered a job as a sanitation worker. My work is to keep this road clean. I have to work whether it's hot or rainy because only then will I get food. I have breakfast before starting my work, sometimes I bring packed food, or eat in the hotels nearby.

Seven Children, Fourteen Grandchildren

I have 7 children, they are all married and living here except the youngest one. I also have 14 grandchildren, and all of them are doing well. My husband passed away 24 years ago, but I feel that when I can, I must earn and take care of myself. I don't expect someone to take care of me.

Things Are Better Now

As for changes in Malleswaram, things are better now. Earlier, it was difficult because I was selling things from home. I don't know much about Malleswaram as a whole, since this is my workplace, I became familiar with only the areas I work in. People are good here. They don't throw garbage around, and that makes it easier for those who pick it up using the cart.
