K. Y. Venkatesh is known for his remarkable achievements as a para-athlete, but his personality is equally striking. Relaxed and down-to-earth, he is someone who easily connects with the people around him and always seems to have someone to talk to. Despite his numerous achievements and national recognition, he remains remarkably grounded.
A Bengaluru-based para-athlete, Venkatesh has built an extraordinary sporting career across several disciplines. Born with achondroplasia, a condition that results in dwarfism, he never allowed his physical stature to limit his ambitions. His passion for sports took him from local competitions to international sporting arenas, where he represented India and won medals in athletics and several other sports.
Finding Inspiration
Venkatesh grew up in Bengaluru as the youngest of five children. His family played an important role in encouraging his interests, particularly his father, a government Ayurveda doctor, who introduced him to competitive activities and coached him in chess during his school years.
His journey into competitive sport was further inspired by C. N. Janaki, who had polio and went on to swim across the English Channel. Her achievement had a profound impact on Venkatesh and encouraged him to explore what he could achieve through sport.
In 1994, he began his international sporting journey by representing India at the first International Paralympic Committee Athletics World Championships in Berlin, Germany.
A Career Across Many Sports
Venkatesh is distinguished not only by the number of medals he has won but also by the remarkable range of sports in which he has competed. Over the years, he has participated in shot put, discus throw, javelin throw, badminton, basketball, hockey, football and volleyball.
In 1999, he won his first international gold medal in shot put at the Southern Cross Multi Disability Championship in Australia. The achievement marked an important moment in his career and was followed by numerous medals at international competitions.
He later won medals in athletics and badminton at championships in Sweden, Israel, Spain and other countries. His ability to compete across different sports reflects the versatility that has defined much of his sporting career.
The World Dwarf Games
One of the most significant chapters in Venkatesh's career came in 2005, when he represented India at the World Dwarf Games. Competing against athletes from around the world, he won six medals across athletics and badminton events. His achievements at the Games earned him recognition in the Limca Book of Records.
However, participation in international competitions was not always easy. At the time, athletes often had to arrange their own funding and find sponsors in order to travel and compete internationally.Despite these challenges, Venkatesh continued to represent India and build an exceptional sporting record.
Recognition and Honours
Over the course of his career, Venkatesh has received several awards in recognition of his contribution to sport. These include the Ekalavya Award and the Karnataka Rajyotsava Award.
In 2021, he was awarded the Padma Shri, one of India's highest civilian honours. The recognition acknowledged not only his achievements as an athlete but also his wider contribution to sports for people with disabilities.
Beyond His Own Career
Although Venkatesh eventually stepped away from competitive sport, his involvement with para-sports continued. He began contributing to the administration, development and promotion of sporting opportunities for people with disabilities.
He has worked to identify talented athletes, support them in reaching national competitions and help prepare them for international events. He has also been involved with organisations promoting para-badminton and other disability sports. His contribution has therefore extended beyond his own sporting achievements. By supporting other athletes, he has helped create greater opportunities and visibility for people with disabilities in Indian sports.
