His passion for acting led him to the stage, where he worked with renowned playwrights before making his film debut in Sankalpa (1973). His breakthrough came soon after with Shyam Benegal's Ankur, establishing him as one of India's leading actors in parallel cinema.

Over a career spanning more than fifty years, Anant Nag acted in over 300 films across Kannada, Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Marathi and Malayalam cinema.
