Origins and Design
This corner property was built in 1955 on land purchased about a year earlier for Rs.3,000! The home has classic Art Deco features like the sweeping curved façade, continuous 'eyelid' detailing, and fluting on the front wall. What makes this house special is that the owner designed it himself. Many details throughout the home came from his experiments with the help of an expert mason.
A Home Built with Love
The home has two bedrooms, one bathroom, and a kitchen that serves as the heart of the house. But it's the thoughtful details that make this property stand out, each one showing the builder's deep love for his wife. Her initials are embedded in the front patio veranda, and her name, Jayamma (shown as the initial "J"), appears in the living room—permanent reminders of the love behind every corner of this home.
The Shrine: Respect and Understanding
One of the most unique features is the specially designed shrine area. Though the owner was an atheist, he wanted to honor his wife's religious practices. He created a window between the living room and the shrine so family members and visitors could watch Jayamma perform 'puja' and join in festival celebrations. The shrine also has a beautifully crafted wooden door with a sunburst design.
Custom Details Throughout
The home has beautiful woodwork and custom details in every room. The doors and pelmets have an intricate reeding pattern. Special closets were built to store Jayamma's sari collection, and a dedicated space was created for her 'veena.' These personal touches show the owner's attention to his wife's daily needs and interests.
A Living Legacy
The property remains with the family today and continues to be cherished for the memories held within every corner. Though compact in size, the home offers a cozy and welcoming atmosphere that has housed multiple generations of the same family. Its lasting character reflects both quality construction and the love invested in its design nearly seventy years ago—a true testament to how architecture can embody human emotion and devotion.
